How do you prepare for photographic work in conflict areas? What should you think about – and what do you do when you actually stand in the middle of it? In this versatile workshop, the renowned war photographer Ron Haviv will provide a unique insight into everything you need to know to work in hazardous areas.

During an intense weekend, VII Photographer Haviv leads you through how it is to be in areas of war and turmoil, how to prepare and what to think about when on the ground. Haviv is an experienced war photographer and comes to Oslo for a unique opportunity to learn about work in conflict areas, storytelling and tips on how to find your own voice in the photography.

«The future of engaged photography, in terms of photographers doing it, will always exist. People like myself have this calling to go, document and tell the stories. My next projects are all going to try different ways to engage audiences, to educate, to inform, to motivate, to take action.”

During his career, Haviv has made extensive coverage of the injustices of war, and the photographs have had a great impact. His ten-year-long work in the Balkans was used as evidence to accuse and convict war criminals at the International Court in The Hague, and President George H.W. Bush used Haviv’s unpleasant photographs of paramilitary violence in Panama as one of the reasons for the US intervention in 1989.

About the workshop

Throughout this weekend you will get a solid foundation for working independently with research and storytelling. The teaching is versatile, and Ron will talk about and show his work and life, as well as how to find your own voice and story in photography.

Ron is an experienced photographer in conflict areas and will provide and introduction on how to best prepare for projects like this. Other important aspects he is approaching in this workshop are how to present your work across different medias, research and financing of work, how to build a story as well as pitching and pricing projects.
